Abstract:Introduction Especially during the discharge process, the behaviour of the granules and their interaction with the silo structure can cause dynamic effects which may be disturbing for the surrounding or even dangerous. Hence, the study of the flow and the stress behaviour of cohesionless granular material and of the resulting dynamic effects on silos has been recognized as being very important. For a realistic analysis, an appropriate material model as well as an effective numerical simulation of the discharge process is necessary. The research effort on the behaviour of granular materials has produced a large number of publications where one important trend is to use hypoplasticity constitutive relations. The development of hypoplastic constitutive equations for granular materials started from the theories of Truesdell in 1955 and 1965 [Tru55] and [TN92]. In the research group of G. Gudehus [Gud79], [Gud96] a comprehensive hypoplastic model for granular materials has been dev
