91   The effect of feedback-assisted reduction in heart rate reactivity on videogame performance The effect of feedback-assisted reduction in heart rate reactivity on videogame performance
Kevin T. Larkin, Stephen B. Manuck;Alfred L. Kasprowicz    1990
In 67 male volunteers, we examined the reduction of cardiovascular responsivity to a psychomotor challenge (videogame) achieved by use of heart rate (HR) feedback and effects of these procedures on concomitant behavioral performance. Each subject participated in a pretraining assessment of his cardiovascular responses to the videogame, a training condition, and a posttraining assessment identical to the initial evaluation. During training, subjects were assigned to one of four conditions: (a) a ...

92   Preliminary results from a controlled evaluation of thermal biofeedback as a treatment for essential hypertension Preliminary results from a controlled evaluation of thermal biofeedback as a treatment for essential hypertension
Edward B. Blanchard, Guy C. McCoy, Frank;rasik, Maryrose Acerra, Thomas P. Pallmeyer, Robert Gerardi    1984
In a controlled trial, thermal biofeedback (n=20) and abbreviated progressive relaxation (n=22) were compared in the treatment of mild to moderate hypertensive patients whose blood pressures (BP) were initially controlled on two medications. For the clinical end point of maintaining control of BP on a single drug after treatment, biofeedback was superior to relaxation training (at 3 months, 47% success for biofeedback versus 23% for relaxation). This same result tended to be true for patient-mea...

93   The effects of instructional set on the outcome of a stress management program The effects of instructional set on the outcome of a stress management program
Edward R. Shaw;Edward B. Blanchard    1983
A multicomponent stress management program, consisting of education about stress, various sorts of relaxation training, and cognitive coping strategies, was administered under two different instructional sets: In the positive demand set the program was touted to have previously been shown to be very effective, while in the neutral demand set the program was described as experimental. The two conditions were compared to a waiting list control. Results showed higher expectations of benefit in the ...

94   The effects of thermal biofeedback and autogenic training of cardiovascular reactivity: The joint USSR-USA behavioral hypertension treatment project The effects of thermal biofeedback and autogenic training of cardiovascular reactivity: The joint USSR-USA behavioral hypertension treatment project
Edward B. Blanchard, Guy C. McCoy, Robert J. McCaffrey, David A. Wittrock, Alison Musso, Marta Berge    1988
Cardiovascular reactivity (heart rate, systolic, and diastolic BP) to mental arithmetic and cold pressor were measured before and after treatment as part of the cross-cultural (USSR and USA) evaluation of thermal biofeedback and autogenic training (in comparison with self-relaxation) as treatments for mild hypertension in unmedicated males. There were no statistically reliable decreases in cardiovascular reactivity from before to after treatment. However, downward shifts in basal levels of systo...

97   Central and peripheral coding of joint position by descending γ-static commands and muscle spindle afferents Central and peripheral coding of joint position by descending γ-static commands and muscle spindle afferents
   2011
The purpose of this study is to investigate plausible central and peripheral coding strategies of joint angle by descending γs commands and proprioceptive afferents in humans. Experimental evidence in both human and animal has shown that the firing rate of Ia afferents was linearly correlated to joint angle. Yet, experiments did not elucidate how Ia encoding of joint angle would be affected by α-gamma; co-activation, and how the peripheral neuromuscular system is informed of central ...

98   The framingham Type A Scale: Cardiovascular and cognitive-behavioral responses to interpersonal challenge The framingham Type A Scale: Cardiovascular and cognitive-behavioral responses to interpersonal challenge
Timothy W. Smith, B. Kent Houston;Raymond M. Zurawski    1985
Most of the primary measures of Type A behavior. have been found to be associated with physiological reactivity to stressors, as well as coronary heart disease (CHD). While it does predict CHD, the Framingham Type A Scale (FTAS) has not been conclusively linked to physiological reactivity. Similarly, in contrast to other Type A measures, little is known concerning the cognitive behaviors associated with the FTAS in stressful situations. The present study was conducted to evaluate the cardiovascu...

99   Anger and denial as predictors of cardiovascular reactivity in women Anger and denial as predictors of cardiovascular reactivity in women
Carol S. Emerson;David W. Harrison    1990
The relationship between behavioral and physiological reactivity and cardiovascular disease has been extensively researched in men, indicating that the expression of anger may be a contributory factor in the development of coronary heart disease. Few studies, however, have focused on women. Among these, women generally have been found to be less reactive to laboratory tasks than men. In the present study, 45 women aged 19–21 years were selected to represent three groups—(1) low ang...

100   The Novacco Anger Scale and Jenkins Activity Survey as predictors of cardiovascular reactivity The Novacco Anger Scale and Jenkins Activity Survey as predictors of cardiovascular reactivity
Roger C. Katz;Timothy Toben    1986
This study investigated the relationship among anger, the Type A construct, and cardiovascular reactivity. The Novacco Anger Scale and the Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS) were used to measure anger proneness and Type A characteristics, respectively. Twenty-four college males were selected from the upper and lower quintiles of the JAS distribution. During the study, the subjects were exposed to varying levels of experimentally induced challenge, while measurements were taken of heart-rate and blood...

Nanoscale metal–insulator–metal (MIM) diodes represent important devices in the fields of electronic circuits, detectors, communication, and energy, as their cutoff frequencies may extend into the “gap” between the electronic microwave range and the optical long-wave infrared regime. In this paper, we present a nanotransfer printing method, which allows the efficient and simultaneous fabrication of large-scale arrays of MIM nanodiode stacks, thus offering the possibility of low-cost mass product

103   Acute effects of alcohol on cardiovascular reactivity to stress in college-age Type A (coronary prone) individuals Acute effects of alcohol on cardiovascular reactivity to stress in college-age Type A (coronary prone) individuals
Amos Zeichner, Patrick Edwards;Enid Cohen    1985
Healthy college-age males and females classified as Type A or Type B were randomly assigned to an alcohol (N=24) or a no-alcohol condition (N=24). Subjects were exposed to a verbal stress quiz while blood pressure, heart rate, peripheral vascular response (PVR), and self-reported anxiety indices were monitored. Results indicated that alcohol effected a reduction in resting levels of systolic blood pressure and a tonic reduction in the peripheral vascular response. Alcohol attenuated the systolic...

104   Type a behavior, irritability, and cardiovascular response Type a behavior, irritability, and cardiovascular response
Timothy W. Smith, B. Kent Houston;Rita J. Stucky    1984
Previous research suggests that high levels of hostility may augment the cardiovascular reactivity and risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) associated with Type A behavior. In contrast, other research indicates that the tendency to deny or suppress anger is associated with enhanced cardiovascular reactivity and risk of CHD. To delineate further the combined role of anger processes and Type A behavior. in CHD risk, this study examined the interactive effects of Type A behavior. and self-reported ...

   2011
Brain-machine interfaces are currently based on techniques allowing either to record at high resolution from one or a few single neurons, or low spatial resolution recordings with a sparse sampling within the networks. To better interface to circuitries and to understand their role in sensory systems or cognition, higher resolution probes are required. In this paper we report a novel technique capable of recording cortical signals at a high resolution providing an electrical imaging of the corti...

Charles R. Carlson, Frank L. Collins, Jean F. Stewart, James Porzelius, Jeffrey A. Nitz;Cheryl O. Li    1989
The present paper describes the development of a scale to measure emotional reactivity. The Emotional Assessment Scale (EAS) consists of 24 emotion descriptors. Subjects rated the intensity of emotion on a 10-cm visual analogue scale. The first study evaluated psychometric properties of the scale by administering the EAS, Profile of Mood States, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory to 120 college students. Reliability and validity of the EAS met established guidelines. Th...

115   The reactivity of the cardiovascular system in experimental noninfectious peritonitis The reactivity of the cardiovascular system in experimental noninfectious peritonitis
P. P. Gusach    1959
The author studied the reactivity of the cardiovascular system of the rabbit to adrenalin and caffeine in experimental noninfectious peritonitis. On intravenous injection of these drugs against the background of peritonitis, the cardiovascular system responded by a more intense pressor and depressor effect. The latter, however, was more pronounced, which may point to the higher tone of the cholinergic nerves in peritonitis.

Timothy W. Smith;Peter C. Brown    1991
Chronically hostile persons may be at greater risk of cardiovascular illness, perhaps because of their more pronounced physiologic responses to interpersonal stressors. The present study of married couples examined the association between Cook and Medley Hostility (Ho) Scale scores and cardiovascular reactivity while couples were engaged in a discussion task with or without an incentive to exert control over their partner. Cynical hostility was associated with greater heart rate (HR) reactivity ...

David M. Murray, Susan M. Blake, Ronald Prineas;Richard F. Gillum    1985
The few studies which have examined stress-induced cardiovascular reactivity among Type A children have had equivocal results. In the present study, 41 extreme Type A and 46 extreme Type B children were monitored for heart rate and blood pressure during a challenging cognitive task under clear or ambiguous performance standards. Significant heart-rate and blood-pressure responses were observed, but no effects could be attributed to the behavior. pattern or performance standards. Type A''s were m...

119   Effect of age on cardiac index, stroke index and left ventricular ejection fraction at rest and during exercise as studied by radiocardiography Effect of age on cardiac index, stroke index and left ventricular ejection fraction at rest and during exercise as studied by radiocardiography
Gur P. Kaushal, Xuede Xiong, Anupama B. Athota, Tricia L. Rozypal, Ralph D. Sanderson and Thomas Kel    2008
Radiocardiography was used to measure cardiac output, stroke volume and left ventricular ejection fraction at rest and during muscular exercise in relation with age in 148 healthy subjects (age range: 6–78 years). A clear dependence of these parameters on age was found. The mean annual decrease at rest was 22±9 ml/min/m2 for cardiac index, 0.22±0.04 ml/m2 for stroke index and 0.0017±0.0003 for left ventricular ejection fraction. Male subjects had significantly (p < ...
