There is a significant need for rapid protein identification methods, e.g., for high-throughput proteomics applications and for the identification of important molecular components involved in diseases and potentially important drug targets (see, e.g., Fig. 3.30 and Chap. 9). For this purpose, several protein and peptide ladder sequencing methods have been developed, see e.g., Fig. 13.1; Edman, 1950; Chait et al., 1993.
